Gamescom 2026 is shaping up to be an important moment for Path of Exile 2. Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that the game will appear during Opening Night Live on August 25, bringing exclusive content that has not been shown before. There will also be a playable demo for visitors in Cologne. For players collecting POE 2 Items, the timing is particularly interesting because the game is moving deeper into Early Access while the community is already looking toward the next major stage. The current discussion around POE 2 Items is closely tied to the 0.5 Return of the Ancients patch and what comes afterward. Players have spent months learning the current systems, testing builds, and adapting to balance changes. Now, many want to know how GGG plans to bridge Early Access and the eventual full release. Gamescom may not answer everything, but it should provide useful clues. The Release Window Needs More ClarityThe biggest issue is still the timing of version 1.0. GGG has previously described 1.0 as the next major milestone and has indicated that the target is late 2026. ExileCon is scheduled for November 7–8, which makes that event a likely location for a definitive launch announcement. That does not mean Gamescom will be unimportant. Opening Night Live gives GGG access to a much wider audience, including people who may not have followed every Early Access update. Showing new content now could build interest before the final marketing push begins. Players will probably be happy with a clear confirmation of the late-2026 target, even if an exact date remains hidden until ExileCon. Patch 0.5.5 Could Change the Short-Term ExperienceThe next major update may be more immediately relevant to current players. Patch 0.5.5 is widely expected to take the form of a separate event league. The proposed structure would include a fresh economy, with characters from Runes of Aldur staying separate from the new event. That setup would give GGG a useful testing environment for significant mechanical changes. Defensive systems and leech are among the areas expected to receive attention, and a temporary event could allow developers to monitor those changes without forcing them directly into the existing progression. A Gamescom announcement could explain the event's length, economy reset, launch timing, and the systems that players should expect to change. A mid-September or early-October window has been discussed, although players will be looking for official confirmation. More Ascendancy Options Could Be ComingPath of Exile 2 is planned to eventually have 12 base classes and 36 Ascendancies. Early Access still represents only part of that larger structure. That has created plenty of speculation about what GGG will reveal next. Some players are expecting unreleased classes, while others think the next step could focus on additional Ascendancy branches for existing characters. Both possibilities could have a significant impact on the game. A new class would introduce another playstyle, while new Ascendancies could change the way established classes interact with skills, weapons, and defensive mechanics. The latter option may also fit the purpose of a 0.5.5 event particularly well. Instead of adding a huge amount of content at once, GGG could use the event to test smaller but important changes before 1.0. The Rest of the Campaign Is Still ImportantThe complete Path of Exile 2 campaign is planned around six acts. Early Access does not yet contain the entire story, leaving Acts 4, 5, and 6 among the most anticipated additions. Act 4 is expected to explore the Karui Archipelago, while Act 6 takes the story into a hellish setting. These locations should give the final campaign a very different feel from the content currently available. However, the missing acts also matter because campaign bosses have a role in the Atlas endgame. Players want to know how many additional bosses will eventually appear in maps and whether the finished campaign will significantly expand the endgame encounter pool. That information could help players understand what 1.0 will look like beyond simply adding three more acts. What Should Players Expect From August 25?The safest expectation is that Gamescom will provide a major preview rather than the complete Path of Exile 2 roadmap. ExileCon remains the more obvious place for huge announcements, especially because GGG can spend more time discussing mechanics and long-term plans there. Gamescom, meanwhile, is ideal for generating wider attention and introducing new players to the game. For existing players, the most useful outcome would be a clearer schedule for patch 0.5.5, more information about unreleased content, and confirmation that the 1.0 plan remains on track. Those details would make the transition from Early Access much easier to understand. They could also influence how players approach their current crafting economy, including whether the POE 2 Orb of Alchemy remains worth saving for future content.
